What Is MiraDry?
MiraDry is nothing short of amazing — it is the only non-invasive treatment that permanently reduces underarm sweat, odor, and hair. It uses precisely controlled microwave energy to heat and eliminate the sweat glands, odor glands, and hair follicles in the underarm. Once those glands are gone, they do not grow back.
Most patients achieve their best results with two treatments. Some patients are very happy after just one session — it depends on how much sweat reduction you're looking for. You may experience some sweating years later as remaining glands adapt, but most patients find that level of sweating feels completely normal compared to what they experienced before.

Is It Safe to Destroy Sweat Glands?
Yes. You have approximately 2–4 million sweat glands across your entire body. The underarms contain only about 2% of them. Eliminating the underarm glands does not impair your body's ability to regulate temperature — the remaining glands throughout your body compensate without any difficulty.
Before Your Appointment
Shave Your Underarms
- Shave both underarms 24–48 hours before your appointment
- Do not apply deodorant or antiperspirant on the day of your appointment
What to Wear
- Wear or bring a loose-fitting top that allows easy access to the underarms
- Consider bringing a fresh shirt to change into after the procedure
Reduce Bruising Risk — Optional but Helpful
For 3–5 days before your appointment, avoid the following if possible (don't stop a prescribed medication without talking to your doctor):
- Ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen
- Fish oil, vitamin E, and flaxseed oil supplements
No Special Preparation Required
You don't need to fast or arrange a driver. Most patients drive themselves and return to desk work the same day, though underarm discomfort will be present for several days.
What to Expect During the Procedure
The entire procedure takes approximately 60–90 minutes.
1
Numbing. The underarm area is numbed with a local anesthetic. We intentionally inject a generous amount of numbing medication to swell the area — this creates more space between the MiraDry handpiece and the underlying nerves, which reduces the risk of nerve-related side effects from the heat energy.
2
Marking. A temporary tattoo grid is applied to the underarm to guide precise, systematic treatment coverage.
3
Treatment. The MiraDry handpiece is applied to the skin at each grid position. You'll feel light suction followed by cooling. Most patients feel no pain during this stage — some notice occasional brief "hot spots" that resolve quickly.
4
Done. You're awake and comfortable throughout. Most patients leave feeling surprisingly good — the numbing wears off over the next few hours, and that's when soreness begins.
After Your Procedure
The Most Important Step: Ice
🧊 Ice — Do This Immediately and Often
Apply towel-wrapped ice packs to both underarms — 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off — for the first 48 hours. This is the single most effective thing you can do to manage swelling and discomfort. Do not skip this step.
Do These Things
- Ice packs as described above for the first 48 hours
- Take ibuprofen (not just Tylenol) for the first several days — anti-inflammatories are specifically recommended because the primary issue is swelling, not just pain
- Gently clean the underarm area with mild soap and water twice daily
- Wear loose, comfortable tops to prevent friction on the treated area
- Gentle walking and light activity are fine immediately
Avoid These
- Strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for at least 48 hours — arm movement and heat increase swelling
- Shaving the underarms for 4–5 days — let any skin sensitivity resolve first
- Deodorant or antiperspirant for 4–5 days
- Saunas, hot tubs, or steam rooms for 1 week
What to Expect: Results
Sweat reduction is typically noticeable right away, though swelling in the first 1–2 weeks can temporarily affect how things feel. Full results are appreciated at about 3 months once swelling has fully resolved.
Day of Treatment
You may already notice less sweating — or you may not because of the swelling. Both are normal.
Week 1–2
Significant swelling, soreness, and possible bruising. Most patients find this phase manageable with ice and ibuprofen. Sweat and odor reduction is already working beneath the surface.
Week 3–6
Swelling resolves. The difference in sweating and odor becomes clearly apparent. Lumps or firm areas under the skin are normal and will resolve.
Month 3
Full results visible. Most patients experience 80–90% reduction in sweat and significant odor reduction. Hair reduction (60–70%) is an added bonus.
Session 2
If you'd like to maximize results, a second session is available at least 3 months after the first. Text 801-776-7129 to schedule.
Things You May Notice
✓ Normal — Expected
- Significant swelling — the "tennis ball" feeling under each arm — for days to a couple of weeks
- Firm lumps or nodules under the skin for 4–6 weeks as the body processes treated tissue
- Tingling, numbness, or altered sensation in the underarm or inner arm — typically resolves within a couple of months
- Bruising or redness from the suction device
- Fibrous bands — firm, rope-like structures causing a "pulling" or "tightness" sensation when you reach overhead. Almost always resolve on their own with daily stretching and massage.
- Chafing from dryness — MiraDry is so effective that some patients notice more friction from the skin being so dry. Applying a bland moisturizer helps.
- Hair reduction in the treated area — a welcome bonus for most patients
- Temporary hyperpigmentation — usually short-lived; can occasionally persist for 6+ months
! Contact Us If You Notice
- Numbness or nerve pain extending down the arm that persists beyond 3 months
- Signs of infection: increasing redness, warmth, pus, or fever
- Any open wounds or blistering that is not healing
- Significant increase in sweating in other areas of the body (compensatory hyperhidrosis — rare but real; let us know)
- Any concern that doesn't feel right — when in doubt, text us
⚠ Note on Nerve Sensation
Temporary tingling or altered sensation in the underarm and inner arm is common and almost always resolves within a few months. In rare cases, nerve discomfort can extend down the arm and persist longer. Please let us know if this happens — it's important for us to monitor and there are things that can help.
Who Should Not Have MiraDry
Please let us know before your appointment if any of the following apply to you:
Heart pacemaker or other electronic implant
Active infection, significant scar tissue, or hidradenitis suppurativa in the underarm
Currently on Accutane or within 3 months of completing it
Known allergy to local anesthesia (lidocaine with epinephrine)
Pregnant or breastfeeding
Previous surgical scars in the underarm area
Very low BMI or minimal fat in the armpit — may increase nerve risk
Under 18 years of age
