What Is Kybella?

Kybella (deoxycholic acid) is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that permanently destroys fat cells beneath the chin — commonly referred to as a "double chin." Treating this area reduces the double chin appearance and improves the angle between the chin and the neck. It can also be used off-label to treat pockets of fat in other areas, including jowls and the "bra bulge" that sits between the bra and the underarm.

Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected, it disrupts the fat cell membrane, causing the cells to rupture and be cleared by the body over the following weeks. Once destroyed, those fat cells cannot store or accumulate fat again. The results are permanent — as long as your weight remains stable.

Am I a Good Candidate?

✓ Good Candidates
  • Moderate submental fat that bothers you cosmetically
  • Good skin elasticity in the neck and chin area
  • Realistic expectations about the gradual, multi-session nature of treatment
✕ Not Appropriate For
  • Active infection or inflammation in the treatment area
  • Prior surgery or significant cosmetic procedures in the neck area
  • Difficulty swallowing or known nerve conditions affecting the lower face or neck
  • Significant skin laxity — fat reduction may unmask loose skin

Dr. Innes will assess your candidacy at your consultation. If significant skin laxity is present, he may discuss complementary treatments — so we don't fix one problem while creating another.

Pricing

Standard Areas
$1,000
Per session
Large Areas
$1,200
Per session

Before Your Appointment

  • Arrive with clean skin in the treatment area — no lotion, sunscreen, or makeup
  • Let us know if you take blood thinners, aspirin, fish oil, or vitamin E supplements — these increase bruising risk
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before — it increases bruising risk and can worsen post-treatment swelling
  • Do not schedule within 2 weeks of a major social event — swelling after Kybella is significant and lasts 1–2 weeks or more

What to Expect During the Procedure

  • The treatment area is marked with a grid to guide precise, systematic injection coverage
  • Multiple small injections are made across the treatment area — typically 20–50 injection points per session depending on size
  • You will feel stinging, burning, and pressure during and immediately after — this is expected and typically peaks in the first 5–10 minutes, then gradually subsides
  • The procedure takes approximately 15–30 minutes

After Your Procedure

Immediately After

  • Significant swelling, redness, and hardness is expected and normal — the area may feel like a firm, tender mass
  • Apply ice packs (wrapped in cloth) as often as comfortable for the first 24–48 hours
  • Take Tylenol or Ibuprofen for pain management as needed
  • Most patients can return to normal activities the same day

What to Avoid

Strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours
Alcohol for 24 hours after (increases bruising and swelling)
Saunas, steam rooms, or hot yoga for 48 hours
Massaging or applying firm pressure to the treated area

Swelling & Results Timeline

Kybella produces the most dramatic post-treatment swelling of any injectable we offer. This is expected, normal, and a sign the product is working — but it is important to plan around it. The area will look larger, not smaller, right after treatment.

Immediately After
Significant swelling, firmness, redness, and tenderness. The treated area will look fuller than before — this is normal.
Days 1–5
Swelling peaks. Most uncomfortable phase. Ice and anti-inflammatories help significantly.
Weeks 1–2
Swelling gradually resolves. Firmness and numbness in the treated area is common and normal during this phase.
Weeks 3–8
As swelling resolves, fat reduction becomes visible. The treated area gradually flattens and the contour improves.
Month 2–3
Full result of the session visible. This is when to assess whether additional sessions are needed.

How Many Sessions?

Most patients require 2–4 sessions spaced at least 4–6 weeks apart to allow swelling to fully resolve between treatments. The number of sessions depends on the amount of fat and the desired degree of correction.

⚠ Don't Judge Your Result Too Early

Do not assess your result until all swelling has resolved — at least 4–6 weeks after each session. The area will look worse before it looks better, and the full benefit of each session isn't visible until then.

Things You May Notice

✓ Normal — Expected
  • Significant swelling for 1–2 weeks — the most common side effect by far
  • Firmness or hard, nodular sensation under the chin for several weeks as fat cells are cleared
  • Numbness or altered sensation — typically resolves over weeks to months
  • Bruising that resolves within 1–2 weeks
  • Redness and warmth at injection sites for the first 24–48 hours
  • Mild itching as the area heals
! Contact Us If You Notice
  • Difficulty swallowing that persists beyond 24–48 hours
  • Asymmetry of the smile or weakness of the lower lip — can indicate proximity to the marginal mandibular nerve; rare but important to report promptly
  • Signs of infection: increasing redness, warmth, pus, or fever
  • Open sores or ulceration at injection sites
  • Any concern that doesn't feel right — when in doubt, text us

A Note on Realistic Expectations

  • Results are gradual and cumulative across multiple sessions — patience is required
  • Kybella reduces fat but does not tighten skin. If significant skin laxity is present, Dr. Innes may discuss complementary treatments so we don't fix one problem while creating another
  • Weight gain after treatment can cause remaining fat cells in untreated areas to enlarge, which may partially reduce the appearance of improvement
  • Results are permanent for the treated fat cells as long as weight remains stable
