Before Your Appointment
What to Bring
📦 Bring to Your Appointment
Compression stockings or leggings — this is important. Please bring a pair of compression stockings (15–20 mmHg) to wear immediately after treatment. For thigh veins, bring thigh-high stockings; for lower leg veins, knee-high is fine. Open-toed styles work well and are available without a prescription at most pharmacies.
Applying compression right after treatment keeps blood out of the treated veins while your body works to dissolve them, and significantly reduces the risk of iron staining (see below). If you don't have compression stockings, bring leggings. Compression is optional but makes treatment noticeably more effective.
What to Wear
- Loose, comfortable shorts or pants that can be rolled up — or bring a pair to change into
- No lotion on your legs the morning of your appointment
- Shave your legs beforehand if you prefer, but it's not required
Contact Us Before Your Appointment If Any of These Apply
⚠ Let Us Know in Advance If You:
- Are pregnant or trying to become pregnant — sclerotherapy is not performed during pregnancy
- Are breastfeeding — we'll discuss timing
- Take blood thinners (warfarin, Eliquis, Xarelto, Pradaxa, Plavix, or daily aspirin)
- Have a history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or clotting disorders
- Have active skin breakdown, infection, or open wounds on the legs being treated
- Have recently traveled long-distance or are planning a long flight within 48 hours of treatment
- Have a known allergy to any sclerosing agents
In the Days Before
- Avoid self-tanner on your legs for at least one week before — it can affect how we visualize the veins
- Stay well-hydrated
- Continue all medications as prescribed unless you've discussed stopping them with Dr. Innes
- Avoid prolonged sun exposure or tanning on the treatment area
What to Expect: Results
Sclerotherapy works by injecting a solution directly into the unwanted veins, causing controlled inflammation and gradual closure of the vessel. The vein doesn't disappear immediately — your body dissolves it over the following weeks.
Setting Realistic Expectations
Plan on approximately 50% improvement with each treatment session. Most patients who want near-complete clearance find that 3 sessions gets them there — though we celebrate progress along the way and only schedule the next session if you want it. There's no required number of treatments. We keep going as long as you're seeing improvement worth pursuing.
| Session | What to Expect |
| Session 1 | ~50% reduction in visible veins. Some areas clear fully; others partially. |
| Session 2 | ~50% improvement on remaining veins. Most patients see significant clearing. |
| Session 3 | Near-complete clearance for most patients. Fine-tuning of remaining vessels. |
| Tiny veins | Very fine veins too small for a needle may be treated with laser — Dr. Innes has the equipment for this. |
Don't judge your final result until at least 6–8 weeks after your last treatment.
About Larger Varicose Veins
Sclerotherapy is most effective for reticular veins and spider veins. Larger, bulging varicose veins are better addressed with surgery or endovenous ablation — if you have these, Dr. Innes will discuss a referral. Treating smaller veins without first addressing any underlying larger vein problems can reduce effectiveness.
If You're Not Responding as Expected
If results after the first one or two sessions are below expectations, we may refer you for a venous ultrasound to check whether faulty valves in the deeper veins are causing reflux — backflow of blood that refills the treated vessels. A vascular specialist would need to address this before smaller vein treatment becomes fully effective.
What to Expect: During & After
During the Procedure
- Each injection feels like a mild pinch or brief stinging sensation — most patients find it very tolerable
- You may feel mild cramping or warmth in the treated area immediately after — this is normal
- We charge $150 per 10-minute increment of treatment — we're happy to treat as many or as few veins as you'd like
Immediately After — Do These Things
- Put on your compression stockings right away, before you leave the office
- Walk around for a few minutes before leaving. When you get home, walk for another 15–20 minutes if possible
- Continue walking and moving regularly over the next several days — this is genuinely important
Recovery Timeline
Immediately After
A hive-like reaction is common in treated areas. Apply ice or hydrocortisone cream, or take an antihistamine as needed for itch.
Days 1–3
Treated areas may look red, swollen, or bruised. Veins may appear darker or more prominent — the inflammation process is working.
Week 1–2
Bruising resolves. Treated veins begin to look darker and cord-like as they close — this is a good sign.
Weeks 3–6
Veins gradually fade as the body reabsorbs them. Final results typically visible at 6–8 weeks.
Next Session
Schedule 4–6 weeks after your last treatment if you'd like to continue.
Things You May Notice
✓ Normal — Expected
- Bruising at injection sites
- Redness or mild swelling in treated areas
- Itching or hive-like reaction — use OTC hydrocortisone 1%; call us if severe
- Treated veins appearing darker or more visible at first
- Firm, cord-like sensation along treated veins
- Small lumps or bumps along the vein path (superficial thrombi — see below)
- Brownish discoloration (hyperpigmentation) — usually fades over weeks; sometimes months
- New tiny spider veins near treated areas (matting) — can be treated
! Contact Us or Seek Emergency Care
- Significant pain, hardness, or warmth in the calf — possible deep vein clot
- Chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, or stroke symptoms — call 911
- Skin breakdown or ulceration at injection sites
- Signs of infection: increasing redness, warmth, pus, or fever
- Visual disturbance or migraine-like symptoms
- Hive-like reaction that is severe or spreading
- Any concern that doesn't feel right — when in doubt, text us
About Superficial Thrombi
You may feel small, firm lumps under the skin along treated veins in the weeks after treatment. These are superficial thrombi — small, trapped clots in the treated vessel. These are a sign the treatment is working, not a cause for concern. They are not the dangerous type of clot that can travel to the lungs. They resolve on their own, and we can drain them at a follow-up if they're uncomfortable.
About Iron Staining / Hyperpigmentation
One of the more common long-term side effects is brownish discoloration along the path of treated veins. This happens when blood trapped in the treated vein breaks down — the iron in the hemoglobin stains the surrounding tissue. Wearing your compression stockings after treatment significantly reduces this risk. In most cases it fades over several months. Sun protection on the treated area also helps.
Post-Treatment Care
Do These Things
- Wear compression stockings as much as possible for 1–3 days after treatment
- Walk frequently throughout the day for the first several days — movement is therapeutic
- Keep the treated area clean and moisturized as it heals
- Apply OTC hydrocortisone 1% if treated areas become itchy or develop a hive-like reaction
- Protect treated legs from sun exposure — SPF or cover up — to reduce hyperpigmentation risk
Avoid These for 48–72 Hours
- Hot baths, hot tubs, saunas, or steam rooms — heat causes vasodilation and works against the treatment
- Vigorous exercise or high-impact activity — light walking is encouraged; strenuous workouts are not
- Direct sun on treated areas — especially important in the first 2 weeks
- Prolonged sitting or standing without movement — try to walk briefly every 30–60 minutes
- Shaving or waxing treated areas until fully healed
✈ Travel Note
Avoid long-haul flights or extended car travel (4+ hours) within 48–72 hours of treatment. Prolonged immobility increases clot risk. If travel is unavoidable, wear your compression stockings and get up to walk regularly.
Scheduling Your Next Session
If you'd like to continue treatment, schedule your next session 4–6 weeks after today's treatment to give your body time to fully process the treated vessels.
- Schedule with my nurse or reception on your way out, or text 801-776-7129 and we'll reach out to schedule
- There's no obligation to continue — we treat until you're happy with your results
- If tiny veins don't respond to sclerotherapy, Dr. Innes can address them with laser at a follow-up visit
