Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

Hyperhidrosis treatment in Layton, Utah: Stop Excessive Sweating

Introduction

Sweating is natural, but for some people it goes far beyond cooling the body down. If you find yourself changing shirts multiple times a day, avoiding gray clothing, or dreading handshakes because of damp palms, you may have a medical condition called Hyperhidrosis.

You don’t have to suffer through the embarrassment. At my clinic in Layton, I treat excessive sweating as a medical condition, not a hygiene issue. As a board-certified dermatologist, I offer effective therapies that can keep you dry and restore your confidence.

It’s Not Just “Being Hot”

Hyperhidrosis occurs when the nerves that control your sweat glands become overactive. This isn’t caused by heat or exercise; the “switch” is simply stuck in the “on” position. It commonly affects:

  • Axillary Hyperhidrosis: Underarms (soaking through shirts).

  • Palmar Hyperhidrosis: Palms of the hands (difficulty gripping, social anxiety).

  • Plantar Hyperhidrosis: Soles of the feet.

Medical Treatment Options

Over-the-counter antiperspirants are rarely enough for true hyperhidrosis. We use a “ladder” of medical treatments to stop the sweat.

  1. Prescription Topical Therapies
    • We often start with prescription-strength aluminum chloride solutions (stronger than anything at the drugstore) or topical glycopyrronium, which contain a medication that chemically blocks sweat production in the treated area.
  2. Oral Medications
    • For patients with generalized sweating (sweating all over, not just under the arms), oral medications like Glycopyrrolate or Oxybutynin can be game-changers. These pills work internally to reduce fluid secretion systemicallly.
  3. Iontophoresis
    • Iontophoresis is an underrated treatment option. Safe and non-invasive. It’s a device where you place your hands or feet in a shallow tray of water while the device passes a mild electrical current through the water to block the sweat glands from producing sweat.
  4. MiraDry
    • For patients seeking a lasting solution for underarm sweat, MiraDry is the gold standard. This FDA-cleared device uses precisely controlled thermal energy (heat) to target and eliminate sweat and odor glands in the underarm area. Most patients see an immediate and dramatic reduction in sweat and odor after just one treatment. Some patients require a second treatment.

Is there a trigger?

Rarely sweating is a symptom of an underlying internal issue or a medication. Seeing a board-certified dermatologist ensures we rule out other causes (like thyroid disease or medication side effects) before we simply treat the symptom.
