Patch Testing for Allergic Contact Dermatitis

Comprehensive Patch Testing in Utah: Finding the Root Cause of Your Rash

Introduction

Do you have a rash that won’t go away, no matter how many creams you try? You might be allergic to something touching your skin—a preservative in your shampoo, a dye in your clothing, or a fragrance in your bodywash. This is called Allergic Contact Dermatitis.

Finding the culprit can feel like looking for a needle in a haystack. While many clinics offer basic testing, at my clinic in Layton, I am one of the few dermatologists in Utah to offer Comprehensive Patch Testing. We don’t just guess; we test to find the answer.

Why We Test for 89 Allergens (Not Just 35)

If you are going to go through the effort of allergy testing, you deserve a complete answer.

Most dermatology offices only offer the standard “T.R.U.E. Test,” which screens for about 35 common allergens. While this catches some of the obvious offenders, studies show that abbreviated testing misses a significant number of allergies.

I offer the comprehensive panel, testing for 89 specific allergens. This extensive screening covers a vast array of:

  • Fragrances and preservatives

  • Rubber accelerators (found in gloves and shoes)

  • Textile dyes

  • Metals (nickel, cobalt, gold)

  • Adhesives and glues

The “Root Cause” Approach

Patch testing is the only way to scientifically identify the root cause of Allergic Contact Dermatitis.

  • The Process: We place small chambers containing the allergens on your back. You wear them for 48 hours, then remove them at home. You return again for the final reading 48 hours later. We usually place the patches on a Thursday, you remove them on Saturday, and then we do the reading on Monday.

  • The Result: If we find an allergy, the “cure” is simple: avoid that chemical. For many patients, identifying that one hidden ingredient (like a preservative in their favorite moisturizer) is life-changing. Their rash clears up, and they can stop using medications entirely.

What If My Patch Test Is Negative?

A negative test is still a victory—it gives us certainty. It tells us that your rash is likely not caused by an external allergy, but is instead an internal condition like Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema).

Because we have ruled out contact allergies with 89-point certainty, we can confidently move forward with the advanced eczema treatments we offer (such as biologics or non-steroidal creams) to get your rash under control.

Why Travel to Layton for Patch Testing?

Comprehensive patch testing requires specialized supplies, storage, and expertise to interpret. Because few clinics in Utah maintain this comprehensive library of allergens, patients often travel to our Davis County clinic from Logan, Ogden, Bountiful, Salt Lake and surrounding areas to get the answers they can’t find elsewhere.
