Lipoma Removal

Lipoma Removal in Layton, Utah: Expert Surgical Care

Introduction

Finding a lump under your skin can be unsettling. If you have noticed a soft, rubbery bulge on your back, shoulders, arms, or thighs that moves slightly when you push on it, you likely have a lipoma.

While lipomas are benign (non-cancerous), they can grow quite large, become unsightly, or press on nerves causing pain. Many patients wait years to get them treated because they fear a major hospital surgery.

At my clinic in Layton, I specialize in removing lipomas right here in the office. As a board-certified dermatologist, I offer a streamlined surgical solution: local anesthesia, minimal incisions, and no hospital facility fees.

What is a Lipoma?

A lipoma is simply an overgrowth of fat cells enclosed in a thin fibrous capsule.

  • The “Iceberg” Effect: Lipomas often feel smaller than they actually are. You might feel a golf ball-sized lump, but because they grow deep into the fatty tissue, the actual mass can be larger.

  • Why Remove It? They generally don’t stop growing. Removing a small lipoma requires a smaller incision (and leaves a smaller scar) than waiting until it becomes a grapefruit-sized mass.

Our Surgical Technique: “The Squeeze”

My goal is to remove the entire lipoma through the smallest possible opening to keep your scar minimal.

  • The Procedure: We numb the area completely with local anesthetic (lidocaine). You remain awake and comfortable.

  • The Removal: I make an incision over the center of the lump. Because lipomas are encapsulated, I can often carefully separate them from the surrounding tissue and “squeeze” them out through the incision intact.

  • The Closure: We use layered sutures to close the “dead space” left behind and ensure a flat, neat scar.

“Is It Just Fat or Is It Cancer?”

This is the most common question I hear.

  • Reassurance: True lipomas are benign fatty tumors. They do not turn into cancer.

  • Verification: However, a rare cancer called Liposarcoma can mimic a lipoma. This is why we send every single specimen to the lab for analysis. You will leave my office with the lump gone and a few days later you will have the lab report confirming exactly what it was.

No Hospital or O.R. surgery Required

General Surgeons often perform these removals in an Operating Room (OR), which means you pay for the surgeon, the anesthesiologist, and the hospital facility. In my dermatology clinic:

  • No general anesthesia (you can drive yourself home).

  • No facility fees.

  • Quick recovery (most patients return to work the same or next day).
