Rashes
Rash Diagnosis & Treatment in Layton, Utah: The Medical Detectives
Introduction
“I have this rash and I don’t know what it is.”
I hear this phrase every single day. Rashes are frustrating, itchy, and sometimes scary. You may have already been to an Urgent Care or a general practitioner, tried three different creams, and still have no answers.
At my clinic in Layton, I love rashes. Why? Because dermatology is detective work. When I walk into the room, I often don’t know which of the hundreds of potential skin conditions you have—but I know how to find the answer.
More Than Just “Steroid Creams”
Many non-specialists treat every red bump the same way: they prescribe a strong steroid and hope it goes away. While that works for some things, it can make other conditions (like fungal infections or perioral dermatitis) worse.
As a board-certified dermatologist, I specialize in Medical Dermatology. My job isn’t just to make the rash go away; it’s to understand why it appeared so we can prevent it from coming back.
How We Solve the Mystery
Diagnosing a rash relies on subtle clues that only a trained eye can see. We narrow down the suspects by looking at:
Morphology: Is it a plaque, a papule, a vesicle, or a macule?
Distribution: Is it only on sun-exposed areas? Is it in the skin folds? Is it symmetrical?
History: Did you start a new medication 3 weeks ago? Did you go hiking? Have you been sick recently?
The “Suspects”: Common Rashes We Treat
While there are thousands of skin conditions, most rashes fall into a few categories. We treat:
Inflammatory Rashes: Eczema, Psoriasis, Lichen Planus, etc.
Allergic Reactions: Contact Dermatitis (Poison Ivy, allergies to fragrances, preservatives, sudsing agents, etc.), Hives.
Infections: Fungal (Ringworm), Bacterial (Impetigo), Viral (Shingles, Pityriasis Rosea).
Drug Eruptions: Reactions to prescription medications (which can happen days or weeks after starting the pill).
When We Need More Clues: The Skin Biopsy
Sometimes rashes don’t “read the textbook.” In other words, sometimes the presentation isn’t classic. If the diagnosis isn’t immediately clear from the exam, we perform a skin biopsy.
The Process: We numb a tiny spot and take a small sample of the rash.
The Lab: We send this to a dermatopathologist who looks at the skin cells under a microscope. This gives us the definitive evidence we need to confirm the diagnosis and start the right treatment.
Why See a Medical Dermatologist?
In an era of “Botox Bars” and med spas, finding a doctor who genuinely enjoys the puzzle of complex medical dermatology is becoming rare. I pride myself on being a comprehensive dermatologist. Whether it’s a simple case of poison ivy or a rare autoimmune blistering disease, I am committed to finding the answer.
