Dermatologic Surgery in Layton, Utah: Expert Care, Minimal Scarring

Introduction

When it comes to removing something from your skin—whether it is a skin cancer, cyst, lipoma, or bothersome mole—the most important decision you make is who performs the procedure.

You have to trust the person holding the scalpel.

At my clinic in Layton, surgery is a cornerstone of my practice. My residency training placed a heavy emphasis on surgical skills, providing me with extensive experience in cutaneous oncology (skin cancer) and reconstruction. We perform these procedures daily with a focus on two things: medical safety and cosmetic outcome.

The “In-Office” Advantage

Many patients assume they need to go to a hospital or see a plastic surgeon for skin removals. In reality, a board-certified dermatologist is often the best choice for these specific procedures.

  • Local Anesthesia: We perform surgeries while you are awake, using local numbing (lidocaine). This avoids the risks and grogginess of general anesthesia.

  • Convenience: No hospital check-in, no facility fees. You drive yourself in and drive yourself home.

  • Cosmetic Closures: Because I am a dermatologist, I am trained to close wounds in a way that minimizes tension and scarring, hiding incision lines in natural skin folds whenever possible.

Surgical Services We Provide

  1. Skin Cancer Removal (Wide Local Excision) For most skin cancers on the trunk, arms, and legs (including Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and Melanoma), the standard of care is a Wide Local Excision.
    • The Process: We remove the visible cancer along with a safety margin of healthy tissue to ensure we “got it all.”
    • The Repair: We use layered sutures (stitches deep under the skin and on top) to ensure a strong, faint scar.
  2. Benign Lesion Removal (Cysts & Lipomas) If you have a lump under your skin, we can surgically remove it. Whether it is a pilar cyst on the scalp or a lipoma (fatty tumor) on the back, we dissect the growth out intact to prevent it from coming back.
  3. Split Ear Lobe Repair This is a specialized procedure we love doing. If years of heavy earrings have stretched your piercing into a slit, or if an earring has ripped through the lobe entirely, we can fix it.
    • The Procedure: We freshen the edges of the tear and surgically reconstruct the round contour of the earlobe.
    • The Result: After healing, you can even re-pierce the ear and wear earrings again.
  4. Mole Removal Not all moles need surgery, but for those that are raised, catching on clothing, or cosmetically bothering, we can remove them via shave removal or excision, depending on the depth.

A Note on Mohs Micrographic Surgery

Patients often ask, “Do I need Mohs surgery?” Mohs is a specialized technique used for high-risk skin cancers, primarily on the head, neck, hands, and feet, where saving tissue is critical.

  • Our Approach: If you have a cancer on your face that requires Mohs, I will identify it and refer you to a trusted colleague who performs Mohs surgery.
  • For Everything Else: For cancers on the body (the majority of cases) or Melanoma, standard Wide Local Excision is the gold standard, and we perform these right here in our office.

Post-Surgical Care

Surgery is a partnership. We provide detailed wound care instructions to ensure your incision heals beautifully. We are also available for suture removal and scar management (should you need it) after the procedure.
